According to the USDA NASS, 9.4 billion birds and mammals were slaughtered for food
in the United States during 2005.

This figure includes only those who were slaughtered in federally inspected plants—hundreds of millions more were killed elsewhere or never made it to slaughter.

Over 98.5% of these 9.4 billion animals were birds. The number of mammals slaughtered for food was still more than three times greater than all of the animals killed in laboratories, for fur, and in shelters combined.
