Tuesday Was National Day of Leafleting

We hope everyone had a good time handing out brochures to students. Soon, we will contact participants to find out how things went and what can be improved in the future. If bad weather prevented you from leafleting, we hope it will be convenient for you to pick a different day with better weather. It's very important that we reach these students!

History of Cooking and Thoughts on Raw Foodism

by Jack Norris, RD

"I would prefer not to see a vegan diet used as a health gimmick for preventing various diseases, particularly when much more evidence is needed, such as for preventing osteoporosis. This dilutes the message of compassion to animals and keeps us from addressing real health concerns. And as I read more and more raw foodist propaganda in vegetarian circles, I have to wonder if even more dietary dogma helps the cause of animal advocacy."

Vegan Weightlifting: What Does the Science Say?

by Jack Norris, RD

"Many weightlifters think a vegan diet might be detrimental to their efforts because of the lower protein content of a typical vegan diet. Other weightlifters feel that a vegan diet enhances their training regimen by reducing fatigue and improving general health. Unfortunately, there are no studies looking directly at vegan weightlifters, but there is a fair amount of research that can be used to extrapolate to vegans."

New Safety Rules Fail to Stop Tainted Meat

"Government inspectors monitoring the automated processing line at the Shapiro Packing meat plant here over the past three years repeatedly discovered sides of beef mottled with cattle manure, a host for bacteria that can be deadly to consumers.

"Last November the inspectors also found E. coli O157:H7, a dangerous bacterium spread by cattle waste, in hamburger and stopped a shipment waiting to go to public schools from a Shapiro meat-grinding facility. Yet the Department of Agriculture delayed more forceful action and never did more than threaten to shut the packing plant down."

Pig Farm Investigation Reveals Thousands of Animals Dead and Dying

"In what must be considered an animal welfare disaster, involving many thousands of pigs in multiple locations across south-western Ontario, a total of seventy-seven animal cruelty charges under the Criminal Code of Canada have now been laid against seven men."
