In Memoriam

-Matt Ball & Anne Green

This issue of Vegan Spam is dedicated to Carole Morton, one of the first members and a major supporter of Vegan Outreach. Carole recently died in Florida.

Anne and Ellen help Carole feed the animals in 1996.

For many years, Carole ran Green Acres Farm Animal Sanctuary near Somerset, PA, as well as acting as as a Humane Officer for the county. (Anyone who has spent time in rural Pennsylvania knows what this entails!) Every Thanksgiving, she hosted a huge and raucous vegan gathering for dozens of people.

Some early "riding" for Ellen.

Anne, Ellen, and Carole, 1997.

We were honored to know Carole and to be involved in her work.
We, and all the animals, will miss her.

Email Problems

Many people have contacted us that they haven't received Vegan Spam in many weeks. This might be because the e-mail is being filtered / routed to your spam or bulk mail folder. If you are reading this, you obviously aren't having problems, but keep this in mind for the future. We try to send out our regular editions on Wednesdays. You can read past / missed issues here.

Concert a Success!

Wanted to share with you some folders from the Ani DiFranco concert. This was the most successful tabling event I have had yet: we passed out close to a thousand Why Vegans!"

The High Price of Cheap Food (free registration required)

"When we picture a farm, we picture scenes from Old MacDonald and "Charlotte's Web," not warehouses with 10,000 chickens, or dairy cows ankle deep in ordure, clustered under tin sheds in blazing Central Valley heat. When we picture the cows, they're grazing on grass, not eating carefully formulated mixes of poultry waste and orange peels. Our understanding of the way our food is produced is so out of date that it takes a mad cow for Christmas to force our gaze to the farming world beyond the refrigerator case. When we look, it's shocking. Our rural idylls have been transformed into stinking factories."
