Adopt a College Program: First Year a Smashing Success!!

(July 7, 2004) The animal protection movement has long needed a well-organized plan for spreading vegetarianism and achieving animal liberation. Last summer, Vegan Outreach (VO) decided that a key component of such a plan must be a systematic effort to reach students at the more than 2,000 colleges across our country. For this reason, VO launched the Adopt a College (AAC) program.

During the school year of August 2003 through June 2004, VO volunteers took Why Vegan?, Try Vegetarian!, and other pro-vegetarian pamphlets onto college (and some high school) campuses and handed them out to students.

Leafleting schools is neither sexy nor exciting. It is hard work.

And it is effective!

It takes one person only an hour or two to hand out 100–400 pamphlets at a college (depending on the size of the school, traffic that day, etc.). Based on feedback over the years, VO estimates that about 5 students eventually go vegetarian for every 200 Why Vegan? booklets handed out -- and even more students cut back on their consumption of animal products without fully going vegetarian.

By October 10, 2003, 14 colleges had been leafleted, and 6,151 pamphlets had been handed to students.

By June 30, 2004, over 170 colleges had been leafleted, and over 80,000 pamphlets had been handed to students!

We calculate that this has resulted in more than 2,000 new vegetarians, and over 3.5 million birds and mammals spared a life of suffering!

When we calculate the expenses of the AAC program, the cost is mere pennies per animal saved!

The Future (Depends on You!)

Please donate to support this greatly needed project.

Vegan Outreach has hired activist Jon Camp part time to leaflet colleges this fall in the Northeast, a relatively neglected part of the country. With more donations, we could secure Jon for the spring semester and even hire more people! Other areas in great need of activity include Texas, Southern California, the Southeast, and numerous parts of the Midwest.

Simply put: More donations = more booklets = more vegetarians = less suffering.

Vegan Outreach thanks you for your continued support of this society-changing program!

Congratulations!

To add some fun and incentive, vegan companies Pangea, The Vegetarian SiteVegan Cats, & Vegan Essentials have donated gift certificates for the top 12 AAC leafleters for the winter/spring 2004 semester. Each winner will also be awarded a framed certificate.

AAC volunteers brave the weather, some nasty comments, and aching backs and feet in order to do this unglamorous but absolutely necessary work.

Please recognize these dedicated activists by showing your support for AAC with any donation you can afford at this time!

It costs many thousands of dollars every month to print and ship booklets to these activists (full listing here). Vegan Outreach is dependent on donations from our members to be able to reach new people. You can make a secure, tax-deductible donation with a credit card here (automatic recurring donations can be set up here); donations via check (also tax-deductible) can be sent to:

Every dollar you donate saves many animals from a lifetime of suffering!
