Notes from All OverCaged Hens Trapped for Five Years
Soya Boom Threat to South America"The spiraling foreign demand for soya beans could mean the loss of millions of hectares of forest and savannah in South America, conservationists warn. WWF, the global conservation group, says … demand for soya exports, used mainly in animal feed, is expected to more than double within 20 years. The report says millions of hectares of Argentine's Chaco and Brazil's Cerrado - the world's most diverse savannah, home to animals found only in South America, like the anteater, jaguar and maned wolf - have also been converted into soya plantations."

From Our MembersWhen President Clinton signed my copy of his
book in July, I asked him if Chelsea was still
vegetarian. He proudly said, "hardcore." We took the COW van out to the Spanish-speaking
neighborhood of Little Village here in Chicago,
and passed out an entire box of Por Qué
Vegano booklets! The reception was fabulous! We've had two successful vegan tables. YSEARC
(Youngstown State Environmental and Animal Rights
Coalition) now has 30 new members to start off
the school year. I also had to the pleasure
of speaking with 2 students who work on farms.
The one kid's parents have a dairy farm, and
raise chickens and pigs ... he said they are
industrial. Another time, I noticed two kids
laughing, so I asked them if they had any questions.
The one kid said he raised calves for the veal
industry and told me the one display I had at
my table was accurate. Then we just got into
talking about the meat and dairy industry --
I learned a lot from them. Hi there! I ordered
a box of 300 Why Vegan pamphlets last
month and I just wanted to say THANK YOU! So
far I have handed out 101 of them at the GENeration
NeXt Fest in Reading, Pennsylvania, where many
kids, teens, and even adults congregate and
have festivities (the main event being the skateboard
tournament). I would have handed out more, but
everyone had so many questions! I just returned from outreach tabling at 4
Dave Matthews concerts in California, where
we distributed over 2,500 Why Vegans.
We had many positive interactions; one person
even said she had received a copy of Why
Vegan earlier in the day at her school.
