Activist Profile: Katia Rodriguez

Continuing our series of activist profiles, today we talk to Katia Rodriguez, Vegan Outreach’s Mexico Campaigns & Spanish Media Coordinator. In addition to helping run VO’s Español pages, Katia has leafleted 36 different schools, reaching more than 29,000 students, and holds the all-time record for the most booklets handed out in a single day with 6,496 booklets at her alma mater, the Universidad Autónoma de Nuevo León!

Do you have a favorite leafleting moment to share?

So far, I can’t say that I have only one favorite moment, I definitely have a few, but one of the most memorable is when I offered a leaflet to a guy who said no in a rude way and walked away. Then, he came back where I was standing and asked for a leaflet, said he was sorry for rejecting it and explained why he did it. He said he kind of knew what the content was going to be about, that he knows eating animals is wrong, but he has been avoiding reading more about it. He said it was time to face the truth, took the leaflet and continued walking. Another favorite moment was when I gave a leaflet to a guy named Israel the day VO officially started its first tour in Mexico at the Universidad Autónoma de Nuevo León [below]. He read the booklet and decided to join us, and he handed out over 1,000 booklets that day.

Cleveland and Albuquerque VegFests

Volunteers Eddie Plotts, Kim Fenton, and Sandie Sajner represented Vegan Outreach at the 2016 Cleveland VegFest. This stellar team distributed 782 booklets and reported that many of the attendees stopped at the VO table and expressed interest in volunteering with us in the future. Eddie said, “It was truly an excellent event, and we had a great time representing VO.” This year’s festival was rumored to have approximately 7,000 attendees!

Karla Reyes and Victor Florez drove all the way from Las Cruces to Albuquerque to represent Vegan Outreach at the Red & Green VegFest, the first-ever event of its kind in New Mexico! Victor and Karla reported that many non-vegans attended, VO was very well-received by those who were thinking about going vegetarian or vegan, and VO’s table was one of the busiest at the event!

Solid AM visit to Louisiana State University in Shreveport, again dealing with the constant rain – three inches reported today! I was stoked to be joined by experienced DC leafleter Stephanie Huffman for this one – a real trooper braving the weather to make it out to join me.

At Bronson Hall, we not only got a good number taking booklets, but also a few responding very enthusiastically. I met Sherman [below], who got a Your Choice on his way in to class. He read it there, then stopped on his way out afterwards to tell me how much he was moved by the information. He told me his mother used to raise pigs at home, and when he was young, he never liked that they killed them for food. He said the leaflet made him realize this really wasn’t necessary, and he wanted to know how he could change his diet “so no one needed to die in order for him to eat.” After a quick talk with some good meal ideas for him to start off on, he got a Guide to Cruelty-Free Eating for some extra help and was ready to begin!

Stephanie, working over at the union, also got some solid interactions, with a few conversations she had working out really super. A true natural at spreading kindness, it was awesome having her come out to help for the day!
