Stupendous Start to Fall Semester Outreach!
by Vic Sjodin, VO Director of Outreach
Thank you to all the selfless Vegan Outreach members who are enabling our hard-working Outreach Coordinators to speak up for animals and changing lives wherever college students can be found. Over 180,000 students have been reached with the case for compassion this semester, and the school year is just starting! It’s an exciting time as we have more coordinators on the ground than ever before and students likewise are more receptive to the message as veganism is becoming more familiar to the public mind.

Sam Tucker has been indefatigable in Australia and New Zealand and has involved numerous volunteers. Pooja Rathor has been off to a phenomenal start in southern India on her first solo tour.
In North America, Yuri Mitzkewich is back to long days running across the Southeast and is in Louisiana at the moment. Yuri also recently joined new coordinator Uma Karri-Hughes in Texas, where she put on a show in Houston and College Station, reaching over 10,000 students in those two cities.
In Virginia, longtime volunteer and new hire Kimberly Moffatt had a truly outstanding start to the semester with numerous positive interactions each day out on campus.

In the Midwest, Rachel Shippee and volunteer John Deetjen have been putting in long days reaching the masses, storming through Iowa, Nebraska, and Wisconsin. Greater Ohio Outreach Coordinator Sean Hennessy was recently leafleting in Morgantown, West Virginia, and will soon embark on a tour of Ohio, Pennsylvania, Michigan, and Indiana.
In the Northeast, Lana Smithson is once again at it, leafleting Maine last week; while in Northern California, Steve Erlsten just started his fall efforts in Berkeley and Oakland.
Jamila Alfred starts VO’s groundbreaking first Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCU) outreach tour in Philadelphia this week.
In Canada, new hire Jevranne “Jev” Martel has been enthusiastically leafleting throughout the week all summer long at numerous venues including tourist areas, parades, fairs, festivals, and city streets in Ottawa and Montreal. Jev is excited to start her first college tour this week.
And last, but definitely not least, our Mexican road warriors Emmanuel Marquez and Katia Rodriguez are back in the car braving all obstacles, reaching undergraduates throughout the northern half of Mexico and recently leafleted Zacatecas, Querétaro, and San Luis Potosí.
Breaking News: Emmanuel, Katia, and a team of volunteers broke the all-time one-day college leafleting record on September 5, handing out 19,202 booklets at Benemérita Universidad Autónoma de Puebla (above). Congratulations, Katia, Emmanuel, and crew!
Thank you all for creating a more compassionate world!

From VO’s Southeast Outreach Coordinator, Yuri Mitzkewich:
A very positive and encouraging visit to Tulane University today—Natalie Amstutz, Ellie Hellmers, Sara Beesley, and I [below] handed out over 2,400 booklets!
After the 3 pm rush, we switched gears and did some chalk activism, putting some thought-provoking text and graphics down along the main boulevard where the most student traffic passes. It was interesting to see how much attention gets paid to these when you see it in action like this. No doubt a great tactic to put to use to get greater impression reach and more attention the day of our events. Leafleting alongside the student activists while they were putting the chalk down was especially good here, increasing the take rate drastically and no doubt improving retention of the info, too. Always great trying new ways of getting our message spread!
—Yuri Mitzkewich, 9/2/16
Beccah Ellis [below, right] and I chalked the sidewalk at Confederation Park today and gave information to people who were reading and interested. We leafleted afterward—had some good chats and also recruited an activist!
