November 8, 2006
HQ: VegieWorld is a great source of frozen vegetarian meats, even though their website is somewhat confusing. The foods we've ordered shipped quickly and arrived still frozen. Each one is so juicy I have to be careful about eating them at work for fear of staining my tie. Just the right amount of sweetness as well. I've had ones from New Jersey, Georgia, South Carolina, and bought straight from the orchard a few miles outside of Washington, DC. Each one has its own character but never disappointing."

It's a great staple for your summer vegan barbeques!"

Bonus link: Vegan Ice Cream.

June 7, 2006

It is often noticed, but rarely discussed, that flatulence can be a significant problem for some people who eat a more whole-foods diet. Solgar's Vegetarian Digestive Aid is a true blessing for those folks -- especially new vegetarians and those who like Gimme Lean and/or veggie chili! You can find them at health-food stores and on-line (e.g., House of Nutrition). Warning -- don't buy any past or near their expiration date.

Carrie Barton offers snack advice: "Primal Strips are the best -- super tasty and available in on the go sizes...the larger size is resealable but I haven't had the need for it yet! I love the mesquite-lime flavor myself. Tasty Eats Soy Jerky is vegan too -- I like the Ginger flavor."

Virgil Butler recommends this website (mentioned below for their peanut butter cups):

"Although we have tried many of the fake meats in grocery stores, their price was just high enough that we often considered some of them a luxury item. Luckily we were introduced to the Not! 'meats' from Dixiediner.com. These are dehydrated non-GMO soy meat alternatives that are so easy to store. You can buy them in all flavors -- 'beef' (crumbles, chunks, and strips), 'chicken' (chunks and strips), 'ham,' and even 'tuna.' Since we live in a rural area with few vegan options, this was a godsend to us.

"You just mix the 'meat' with an equal amount of water and boil until the water is absorbed to rehydrate, or simply toss a handful in to any kind of soup you are cooking. They would be great either for single people or large groups, and especially for campers.

"We have fooled quite a few meat-eaters with them because the taste and texture are so close to the real thing. Although they are fine to be used as is, we have found that adding a little bit of vegan bouillon and even sometimes some liquid smoke can make them taste even better, like in gravies or when using barbeque sauce. And at an average of only 72 cents per pound, they are certainly a good value for those vegans on a limited budget -- much cheaper than real meat! We have gotten several meat-eaters to order some after tasting them."

MacKenzie Barrett writes: "If you miss peanut butter cups, try the 'Beanit Butter Cup Mix' from Dixie Diners' Club. It comes as a mix, and makes 25 small size peanut butter cups that taste just like the ones I used to buy before becoming vegan!"

And if looking for a holiday treat for a new vegan or budding activist, keep Meat Market in mind. VegNews said: "Erik Marcus' Meat Market radically redefines what it means to be an effective animal advocate in the 21st century."

Joyce Tenerowicz writes: "Morningstar Farms has bags of unbreaded mock chicken strips. I made them into 'chicken' and dumplings, and they were excellent (I think they are best if you brown them in a frying pan before adding it to a soup to keep the texture). They also have mock beef strips in the same type of packaging. Both of the new mock meat strips are vegan and are marked as such on the bag." The Morningstar site also has recipes.

Jack Norris writes: "Blood sugar low? These will wake you up -- rice krispie treats made with the marshmallows from Pangea, the only vegan marshmallow on the market at this time. They even have a recipe on the bag, are easy to make, and delicious!"

Rachel Haugley offers: "My suggestion is aimed at all the moms (and dads): 'Tofutti Kids' are wonderful -- it's an ice-cream dessert with either strawberry, lime or orange coating (reminiscent of 'dilly bar' coating). These are awesome! Kudos to Tofutti for staying on top of their game!"

The irrepressible Joseph Espinosa writes: "Morningstar Farms is dead on with their Tuno, delivering all of the flavor and none of the suffering and death that comes standard in cans of Tuna. I have missed that taste for 12 years. I am happy to be reunited."

Michelle Gmaz writes: "The maker of the hair care line Jonathan Product is proud enough to put 100% vegan on the very front of the product. So of course, I had to try it. It is being sold through QVC and Sephora. It is so popular that it is sold out almost everywhere, but I managed to get the shampoo, conditioner and leave-in glossing creme. This stuff is great, like high-end salon products."

Janet Good writes: "I just discovered Celestial Seasonings Tea Dreams, a new line of dairy-free 'ice cream.' And I thought Freezees was good! Well, it is.....but this new item rocks. Flavors include Vanilla Ginger Spice Chai, Chocolate Caramel Chai and Cinnamon Apple Spice. I will never be the same."

Christopher Scott writes: "I was given an 8 oz. tub of Tofutti brand Better Than Cream Cheese - plain. I think it must have been a mistake because it is so good! It has a slight nutty flavor like Wheat Thins - I had a hard time not eating the whole thing at one shot! The only reason I didn't is that one ounce has 80 calories so I only ate half the container at a time."

Michele S. Christensen writes: "Gardener's Hand Cream from Trader Joe's works really well as a moisturizer, and really helps the skin look younger. I swear it works as well or better as some very expensive non-vegan products I used to use. I can feel the effects a full day after applying it, and I wash my hands at least 10 times a day just at work. Also, it has the all-important sunscreen and it is cheap (about $4 for a large tube). It states right on the label 'Not tested on animals, No animal by-products.'"

Also -- help encourage Trader Joe's to go cage-free!

Carol Hutson writes: "Wow! Tofutti Blueberry Wave milk-free Cuties tastes like blueberry cheesecake ice cream. This is the best animal-free ice cream I have tried. My husband and I kept saying 'yum' the whole time."

Both Joe Espinosa and Gil Schwartz recently wrote to rave about Boca, which has recently reintroduced their Chik'n patties and nuggets without the eggs and milk products they previously had.

June 29, 2005
Alyson Powers of Iowa City writes: "Soy Delicious has a special "Truly Decadent" line of soy ice cream that is fantastic! My favorite flavors are Mocha Almond Fudge, Turtle Tracks and Peanut Butter Zig-Zag. Mmmmmm... Great for hot summer days!"

June 15, 2005
Dallas Rising writes: "Heart Thrive Nutritious Meals To Go are so awesome. They taste great, and supply a lot of fiber, calcium, and protein. To me they're sort of a cross between an energy bar and a healthy cookie. They come in lots of flavors (raisin, apricot, apple, etc.) and are perfect for eating after a workout. For more info, visit www.suncakes.com"

Note: In a previous week, Greenies were mentioned as a dog treat. According to the manufacturer: "the ingredients used for the natural flavoring are proprietary but we can tell you that there is a very small amount of non-beef based animal protein used." Our apologies.

June 8, 2005
Angela Lassiter writes: "I'd like to nominate Follow Your Heart's Vegan Gourmet 'Mozzarella-Style' Cheese Alternative. IT MELTS, and it takes so much like the real thing, I can't believe it's vegan!"

June 1, 2005
Hyla writes: "Wildwood makes the very very best soy products! Soy yogurt, their plain, is really fabulous. NO SUGAR! This makes it so much better. And their soy milk - chocolate, is so excellent. We like it even better than Silk, which we are quite familiar with as well."

Amie Hamlin offers: "Tofurky Sausages - they're huge, they're delicious, they blur the line between real meat and fake. I don't like fake meats, but these are truly good. Saute the Sweet Italian Sausage flavor (contains sun dried tomatoes and basil) and then add to spaghetti sauce; saute the Beer Brats (made with microbrewed beer) with onions and peppers, and eat on bread. Do the same with the Kielbasas. If anyone thinks they're not getting enough protein on a veg diet, these pack 29 grams each!"

And for some of the non-human readers out there, Veronica says: "My vegan dogs loooove Greenies and Greenies P-Nutz. Great for their teeth, too!"

In honor of Jon Camp's recent birthday, this week's product is Chocolate Silk. Lucy Kelly writes: "More and more stores are selling Silk is Soy chocolate soymilk. It has a good helping of essential vitamins and is a good addition to smoothies."

Although his 40,000+ booklets handed out this semester for Adopt A College is almost double the entire program's Fall 2003 total, Jon could have handed out 80,000, if he didn't spend half his time fantasizing about Chocolate Silk!

Editor's note: Silk Enhanced has Omega-3s, Vitamin D, and B12.

Joe Espinosa writes: "I spied Gardenburger's BBQ Chik'n next to their BBQ Riblets at the Jewel grocery store in Crete, IL (not the most sophisticated store in the world). My whole life I thought that I did not like BBQ. When someone would use BBQ sauce I would have to leave the room because I did not like the smell. However, I was pushed into trying the Gardenburger Riblet and discovered that my fear of the sauce was unfounded. I love the BBQ Chik'n even more -- so much so that I had to go back and buy it again the very next day."

Editor's note: Gardenburger's Buffalo Chik'n Wings are easily the spiciest mass-market "fake meat" product I've ever had.

Looking to get more antioxidant-rich berries in your life? Check out Northland Cranberry juices -- the Cranberry-Blueberry is especially good!

And don't forget how high in antioxidants dark chocolate is! Irene RIndos writes: "Scharffenberger dark chocolate is the best dark chocolate ever! The best is their Nibby Bar, dark chocolate with cacao nibs."

Anne Green comments: "Everything can use some more Teriyaki Sauce! House of Tsang's works on everything from a stir-fry to a veggie burger to a salad!" Available in ethnic food sections of grocery stores.

Last week, Carnegie Mellon student MC mentioned Philly cheesesteaks. Tofurky has a "Philly Style" Steak Deli Slice (scroll down). This is great fried with onions and Follow Your Heart cheese or your favorite vegan cheese recipe!

Jean Bettanny writes: "I just discovered Loma Linda Big Franks (they are canned). Tasted a sample at Vegfest in Seattle and found them to be delicious! Can't find them locally so searched the web and now mail order them from Andysmarket.com."

Jack Norris writes: "Check out Primal Strips meatless jerky. A friend sent me a couple samples, and they are the best thing I've eaten since becoming vegan a million years ago!"
