Text and pictures can’t begin to describe the overcrowding and confinement, the stench, the racket, the extremes of heat and cold, the attacks and even cannibalism, the hunger and starvation, the disease…the horror of every day of their lives. Some of these videos do a somewhat better job, but still fail to convey the reality.
Investigations
2009
A Mercy For Animals undercover investigation reveals the conditions inside New England’s largest egg factory farm:
Rotting carcasses left in cages with live hens; workers and managers killing birds by grabbing their necks and swinging them around in circles; live birds thrown into trash cans; birds suffering from broken bones, bloody open wounds, and untreated infections; hens confined four to six in wire cages so small they were unable to move freely or stretch their wings; birds trapped in the wire of their cages or under the feeding trays without access to food or water—some with their faces or other body parts pressed against moving conveyor belts; live hens kicked into manure pits, where they either drowned in liquid feces or died from illness, injury, or starvation.

Earlier
In January 2007, a Mercy For Animals investigator took a job at one of the nation’s largest poultry slaughterhouses to witness the conditions firsthand:
Birds with broken legs and wings, open wounds, and large tumors were shackled and hung on the slaughter line; some of the injured were left writhing on the floor for hours beforehand. Workers punched, kicked, threw, and mutilated live birds; they tore eggs from the birds’ bodies to toss at coworkers, and ripped the heads off birds who were trapped inside the transport cages.
In 2005, at an even larger facility, a PETA investigator saw many birds mangled by the throat-cutting machines; workers yanked the heads off birds who missed the blade. Video; photos.
