Activist Profile: Cat Liguori

Continuing our series of activist profiles, we interview Adopt a College volunteer Cat Liguori. To date, Cat has reached more than 15,600 individuals with Vegan Outreach booklets!

Cat Liguori

What was your most positive leafleting experience and why?

I’ve had a couple experiences where I got to see an immediate effect. One time I was leafleting at a festival, and I gave a guy a leaflet on his way in. He passed me as he was leaving a couple hours later and said that he’d read through it and was going to stop eating meat. Another time, at a community college, I handed a woman a leaflet and she brought it back about 30 seconds later. She said, “Those pictures are enough, I’m a vegetarian now.”

Another great experience was a conversation I had with a guy who said he wanted to help animals, but felt like going vegan was “too extreme.” I asked him about trying it one day a week, like doing Meatless Mondays, and he said, “That I could definitely do! And I think I could even get the rest of my family to do it with me!” He walked away seeming really excited.

Send Your Personal Message to Leafleters

As I began to lose feeling in my fingertips, I said to myself, “In this freezing cold, who is going to take their hands out of their pockets to take one of my leaflets?!” But I was pleasantly surprised!

When I present a leaflet, I look directly at the person, smile, and say, “For the animals.” There were several who took a leaflet only after they heard the words. They would pass me by, then turn around to take one. It was heartwarming. One person said, “Thank you for doing this.” And one person said, “Please give me two of them.”

Kevin Mercer braves a snowstorm to leaflet Colorado College.

When I feel too cold, my mind immediately goes to the farmed animals who are transported to slaughter in open trucks, in both frigid and torrid temperatures, and my heart just breaks and breaks and breaks. The horror of it.

Please take a moment to say “thank you” to the Outreach Coordinators and volunteers who are braving the cold weather to leaflet for the animals. Leave your thank-you message here. It only takes a minute, and it will do so much to inspire our activists to keep up their critical work.
