Activist Profile: Steven Litrov

This week, we profile Steven Litrov, Outreach Coordinator for Vegan Outreach. In March and April, Steven spent seven weeks on the road in Canada and New York. In that time, he leafleted at 34 schools, reaching more than 24,000 students. Steven is the embodiment of dedication and kindness, and we’re excited that he’ll be resuming his work in the fall, traveling throughout the United States, reaching college students with the animals’ plight.

Do you have a favorite leafleting moment that you wish to share?

My favorite moment has been leafleting at Brock University in St. Catharines, ON this past semester. I had a ton of volunteers, they were all beyond awesome, many were from the animal rights group on campus, a few were leafleting for the first time, we had a huge lunch prepared by the vegan food program on campus, we had the place completely covered, and we set a huge record. We had also set a new record every day that week. It was the best!

Do you have any advice for those hesitant about leafleting?

Watch some leafleting videos on YouTube, as they are often helpful and encouraging, find a local leafleting opportunity in your area, and spend that time leafleting with someone who is experienced!

Steven: “Rice Dream horchata is one of the only (if not the only) ready-to-drink non-dairy horchata drinks and is a nice, sweet, and unique departure from all the other non-dairy assortments. Wish I had some now!”

Amazing record-breaking day on our first stop in NY! John Sakars and I were once again joined by Ellie Donohue-Miller, an amazing activist we had on our previous record-breaking days at Guelph, Niagara, and Brock; and a new leafleter named Amy Garside, who works at SUNY Cortland! Amy very much enjoyed her first time leafleting and has plans to continue doing outreach herself!

I was received very well by teachers and students at Tompkins Cortland CC and was quickly informed there was going to be a Cowspiracy screening next week. The take rate was amazing and having the opportunity to inform students about the screening and the school’s upcoming Earth Week (partly organized by our amazing, angelic host and professor at Tompkins, Amber Gilewski!) was really great. I had a few nice, long positive interactions with students who had concerns about what to eat and how animals are treated and their impact on the environment, and they were really thankful and attentive.

At SUNY Cortland, John also encountered Audray [shown], who had gone vegetarian after receiving a VO booklet last year and is now vegan! Hooray!
