What got you interested in animal rights and veganism?

I was 80 pounds overweight, dealing with pre-diabetic symptoms, and I struggled with my cholesterol levels. I had a horrible self-image. I suffered from migraines and I didn’t know why. I had difficulty breathing, and I had joint pain in my knees from carrying around extra weight. I was 24 years old and my doctor said that I should be very concerned about my heart.

One night I didn’t go out with my friends, because I had nothing to wear that would fit me—I was embarrassed at how big I’d gotten. Netflix was just becoming a common form of media, and I stumbled over a documentary called Forks Over Knives and it changed my life. The first five minutes described my health issues to a T, and the film explained how to reverse all of those issues. I went vegan that night, and my first month I lost nearly 20 pounds by just cutting out meat and dairy!

I reached 670 students today at East Tennessee State University. Gia [below, right] took a Compassionate Choices and went to study in the cafeteria. Instead of studying, she researched the entire leaflet and accidentally found Earthlings on Google. She was physically sick to her stomach when she found me later and asked me how to go vegan. I gave her a Guide to Cruelty-Free Eating, social media of fellow vegans for support, online recipes, etc. She thanked me for being there and took some leaflets to hand out to her class.

Yesterday I handed out 600 Compassionate Choices booklets at Cabrillo College. One student, who was in a hurry, stopped to say she’s been wanting to go vegan, and this was the prompt she needed to make it happen!

Today I leafleted Hartnell College and two high schools, reaching another 1,250 students. I spoke with Pablo, who remembered talking to me last semester. He took some booklets to share with people in his community. I also talked to Christopher [below], who said our booklets were a major factor in his decision to go vegan! We made a quick video.

Yesterday at Savannah State, VO Greater Los Angeles Community Engagement and Events Coordinator Gwenna Hunter and I handed out 769 booklets and met four vegetarians and one vegan. Gwenna heard there’s such demand for plant-based options at the school, they’re considering creating a vegan/vegetarian dining area. We also met a young woman [below, left] who’s going to request a vegan mentor. She wants to eliminate meat but is tempted by campus food.

We reached more than 530 students today at South Carolina State and Claflin University. I met a sophomore [below, right] who’s trying to go vegetarian but doesn’t know how. I encouraged her to join the Vegan Mentor Program and gave her a card.
