Spring ’17 Semester: Outreach Coordinators Travel Far and Wide to Spread Veganism

By Vic Sjodin, VO Director of Outreach

This spring, Vegan Outreach had a prolific semester of outreach. Our humane education program is taking off, we’re doing more of Animal Equality’s iAnimal virtual reality showings, and we’re still handing out booklets anywhere students can be found!

Starting up north, Jevranne Martel braved the elements more than anyone else on tour, and leafleted Canadian schools coast to coast—all the way from British Columbia to Nova Scotia. And for the first time in VO history, she reached students in the province of Prince Edward Island.

Moving down into the United States, Yuri Mitzkewich gave out booklets in Texas for his first time, in addition to covering Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, and some of Florida and Georgia. Yuri also walked away from a car accident after being hit by an errant driver in Mississippi—although his car was totaled, he was thankfully okay and back on tour a few days later!

This spring also saw another successful tour of historically black colleges and universities (HBCUs) as Nzinga Young and Gwenna Hunter paired up to share the message in Louisiana, Florida, the Carolinas, Georgia, Alabama, and Mississippi.

Kimberly Moffatt spent her second semester leafleting Virginia, Upstate New York, Long Island, Connecticut, and eastern Pennsylvania. Alexis Clark leafleted nearby in New Jersey and New York City. Both endured blizzards and unusually bad weather for weeks on end to speak up for the animals.

Lana Smithson reached out to students in Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont, and Massachusetts, and gave several talks. Also joining the US frozen foursome, John Deetjen had a spectacular run through Wisconsin, Minnesota, Iowa, Nebraska, and Illinois.

Victor Flores leafleted New Mexico and West Texas, while also hosting many fruitful community outreach events.

Cristina Myers completed her first tour this spring, and it was a great success! She leafleted 42 schools and said touring was much harder than she had imagined, but loved seeing students make the connection every day. Her enthusiasm for this work is contagious.

Stalwart Rachel Shippee covered Michigan, and first-timer Chris Shapard did a great job covering Montana, Utah, Idaho, and eastern Washington.

Sean Hennessy at Ohio State

Sean Hennessy gave numerous humane education presentations, while also leafleting Ohio, western Pennsylvania, West Virginia, Kentucky, and Indiana.

In between office work as Communications Manager, Lori Stultz covered Arizona and Colorado.

California diehard Steve Erlsten continued his superb efforts handing out a semester-leading 74,185 booklets at 92 schools. Steve covered the Los Angeles area for his first time with great aplomb.

In Mexico, Katia Rodriguez and road warrior Emmanuel Marquez, along with many volunteers, set the world record for leafleting 22,800 students in a single day at the Universidad Autónoma de Nuevo León. Katia and Emmanuel also gave numerous humane education presentations, and hosted multiple iAnimal virtual reality showings. Many thanks to Joselyn Aguilar for joining Emmanuel as an intern, spreading the word about helping animals at 44 universities.

In Australia, Sam Tucker and volunteers set record after record!

In India, we continued to lay a great foundation for outreach by redesigning and updating our India booklet, and building up the volunteer base. Siddharth Sharma and Pooja Rathor both have more tours planned in the near future, and we expect to see our India outreach continue to grow!

A massive thank you to all the volunteers, hosts, and donors who continue to be a part of the beautiful movement of positive change. I couldn’t be prouder of all the Outreach Coordinators’ efforts and all we accomplished together this semester! Thank you, everyone!

Recent Feedback

Today at San Francisco State University, volunteer Dany Petelle and I got booklets into the hands of 2,050 people. Dany met one student who went vegan eight years ago after getting one of our booklets!

Last week at the University of Maine, a student [below, right] came over to tell me that she and her mother decided to try to go veg after reading the pamphlet; I got a video of her. Today at Southern Maine Community College, a student [below, left] came back to tell me the leaflet convinced him to take steps toward going vegan.
