Vegan Outreach in Bakersfield

By Katia Rodriguez, VO Mexico Campaigns and Spanish Media Coordinator

In late May, while traveling through California, VO Mexico Outreach Coordinator Emmanuel Marquez and I were asked to speak at an event organized by one of Vegan Outreach’s most dedicated volunteers and supporters, Merari Ordaz. Merari was organizing an educational event to promote vegan living among the Latinx community in Bakersfield, CA.

Merari Ordaz

Merari and her family care so much about their community that they offer free vegan cooking and health classes once a week. When she reached out to me and Emmanuel, we weren’t surprised to hear she was planning a big event! To learn more about Merari, check out the interview we did with her last week.

About 40 people attended the outreach event. In addition to hearing how their food choices can positively influence personal health, the environment, and the animals, the audience members also got to hear about Vegan Outreach and the work we do. Everyone was very engaged when we spoke and asked a lot of questions at the end. After the presentation, several people approached Emmanuel and me to express how thankful they were to have us there. One person even told us that she planned to go vegan!

Event attendees

Everyone at the event enjoyed vegan nachos, tacos, salad, scrambled tofu sandwiches, chocolate chia pudding, and cupcakes. Adrey Santos provided vegan popcorn from his family’s business Pop-Pa’s Gourmet Popcorn.

We’d like to thank Merari and her family for hosting the event and inviting us to speak—and for everything they do for their community.

Can Your Dog Be Vegan?

“Being that wolves are mainly carnivores in the wild and share a common ancestor with dogs, many people have the preconceived notion that dogs require an animal-based diet to be healthy, but is this the truth?”

Massive day of outreach on Monday! Vegan Outreach teamed up with Animal Activist Collective and Truth Riders to help launch the new Victoria University Vegans club. In addition to the leaflets and Animal Equality’s iAnimal virtual reality outreach, we fed students lots of free delicious vegan food, played footage of factory farms and slaughterhouses on TV screens to hundreds of students, plastered the campus in posters, chalked some pro-animal messages, and got nearly 100 people to sign up to the club! (Our initial aim was to just get over 10 so the club could be officially registered with the university, and we well and truly smashed that goal!) And with 1,150 booklets distributed, we set a new record for the Footscray Park campus!

Today at the University of Melbourne in Parkville, volunteers David Radunz, Annie Campbell, AJ Bond, and I handed out 4,050 booklets—a new all-time Aussie record!
