WisePies Fundraiser

Earlier this year, Vegan Outreach worked with WisePies to roll out vegan cheese on their menu. Last week, we were invited back for a weekend-long fundraiser in Albuquerque, NM. The Southwest pizza chain kindly agreed to donate 20% of the proceeds made from the vegan pizza sales.

VO Fundraiser at WisePies

To kick off the fundraiser, we held a pizza party with free giveaways from Violife Foods, and it was a huge success! Over 60 people came out to support the event, with some vegan pizza lovers driving from Santa Fe, more than an hour away. Attendees raved about the new cheese pizza and were grateful to have a new delicious and affordable vegan option in New Mexico.

Greater New Mexico Community Engagement and Events Coordinator Victor Flores said, “Everyone had a blast and some took Vegan Outreach literature to share with their friends and family!”

If you live in the Albuquerque area and missed this delicious event, don’t worry! We’ll be hosting another fundraiser October 27–29. Please email VictorF@VeganOutreach.org for more information!

Adopt a College on a Tear!

Quick mid-semester update—the Adopt a College leafleting program is having its best semester ever—we’ve been to 526 schools and handed booklets to over 680,000 students! Leafleters are hearing from more vegans and people wanting to go vegan than ever before. Thank you for supporting this program!

VO supporter and volunteer Yannick Lambrecht, Outreach Coordinator Kacy Franzen, and Director of Outreach Vic Sjodin (above, left) handed out 2,512 booklets in a single day at Mt. San Antonio College. After reading a Compassionate Athlete, weightlifter Joseph (above, right) wants to go vegan. Dolly (below, right) also wants to go vegan after reading a booklet, and signed up for our Vegan Mentor Program. Jose (below, left) came back after reading a Compassionate Choices cover-to-cover in his 8 am class; although his girlfriend is vegetarian, he’d never fully gotten it—but after speaking with Vic and receiving a starter guide, he’s very enthusiastic about going vegan!

Activist Profile: Yuki Takahashi

Continuing our series of activist profiles, this week we speak with Yuki Takahashi, who just wrapped up an internship with VO Southeast Outreach Coordinator Yuri Mitzkewich. Yuki joined Yuri for the first five weeks of his leafleting tour and handed out 38,019 booklets at 29 schools—and together they set new campus records 21 days in a row!

Do you have a favorite leafleting moment to share?

At the University of Southern Mississippi, I met a man named Nicholas [right], who’d received a Compassionate Athlete booklet. After talking with him for a little while about veganism, he jumped in and leafleted with us for the rest of the day.

Do you have anything else you’d like to add about leafleting?

Leafleting is a lot more interesting and rewarding than I ever imagined. When I was signing up for the internship, I had some concerns that I’d become robot-like—mindlessly doing a repetitive task. To the contrary, leafleting was engaging, interactive, and energizing. Throughout the five-week internship, I never got tired of doing it!

Products of the Week

Yuki: “I actually haven’t explored very many special vegan products, but Daiya cheese is probably my favorite so far. Even my sister, Seika, who is a big fan of cheese, said that the Daiya cheese pizza is the best pizza she’s ever had.”

Recent Feedback

[My mentor] is great! She is very understanding, helpful, and kind. Never pushy or condescending. [She] checks in often with new tips and resources. Her most recent correspondence provided lots of great options to enjoy a vegan Thanksgiving. Thank you so much for offering this [Vegan Mentor Program]. It has been most helpful!
