New US Leafleting Record!

November 14 was an epic record-breaking day for Vegan Outreach—in a single day, activists handed out 14,300 booklets at the University of Central Florida.

VO Outreach Coordinators Cristina Myers, Kimberly Moffatt, and Yuri Mitzkewich, intern Sarah Weldon, and a team of dedicated volunteers came together and surpassed the previous US record for the most leaflets handed out on one campus in a single day.

Reflecting on the successful day of outreach, Cristina said, “I’ve been telling Vic [Sjodin, VO’s Director of Outreach] that we were going to break the US record for almost two months now. The end of the fall semester is drawing to a close, and today was the day we’d been waiting for.”

Vegan Outreach has officially reached over one million students this semester, and we couldn’t be more grateful for the VO staff and volunteers who are working toward a vegan world! And a huge thanks to our donors, who make our outreach possible!

Taco Buffet Dinner & Discussion

Vegan Outreach’s Community Events team has been doing amazing work this year! From New York to California, they’ve been leafleting, attending festivals, and engaging groups in schools and community organizations in vegan-related events.

In addition to attending the 2nd Annual People of Color: Animal Rights, Advocacy, & Food Justice Conference in Los Angeles last month, VO Community Events Coordinators Nzinga Young, Gwenna Hunter, and Victor Flores came together to host an informative taco buffet dinner at the Weingart YMCA.

Attended mostly by non-vegans, the event featured delicious vegan Mexican food and an engaging discussion about the benefits of eating vegan. Check out this video for a fun recap of the event!

On Monday at the Universidad Autónoma de Aguascalientes, I was joined by volunteers Carolina Loy and Sergio Navarrete [below], who run a local vegan restaurant. Together we handed out 1,066 booklets.

Today at the Instituto Tecnológico de Aguascalientes, I met Martha Esqueda [below], a member of the students’ association who also collaborates with some animal protection and ecological groups. She told me the association made an agreement with the principal to change the way the school treats stray dogs. Previously they were sent to the pound, but now the institute lets them stay, acting like a foster home while the students find them permanent homes. Martha’s really interested in organizing an activity with VO at the institute.

I also had a short conversation with a security guard who asked for a brochure early in the morning. At the end of the day, he told me the work I was doing was really necessary because meat is harming a lot of people, and the animals suffer immensely in the slaughterhouses. It was motivating to witness how people start to change the way they see the animals.
